Singapore has a reputation for being expensive. And for some things, it is. But there's a surprisingly long list of genuinely free things available to Singaporeans and PRs — from world-class museums to digital learning platforms to nature experiences that rival paid attractions. Most people walk past these every day without realising they're free.

This isn't a list of "free things during a special promotion." Everything below is permanently free (or free for citizens/PRs) and available year-round. Bookmark this page and come back whenever you're looking for something to do without spending a cent.

Free Museums & Galleries

All National Heritage Board (NHB) museums offer free admission to permanent galleries for Singapore Citizens and PRs. Just bring your NRIC (pink or blue) for scanning at entry. Special exhibitions may require paid tickets, but concessions are available for students, seniors, and children 6 and under.

Free permanent galleries at:

  • National Museum of Singapore — Singapore's oldest museum, covering the country's history and culture.
  • Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) — Pan-Asian art and heritage on the Singapore River. Weekend visits may require online booking.
  • Peranakan Museum — Dedicated to Peranakan culture and heritage.
  • National Gallery Singapore — Free entry to permanent galleries (Singapore Stories and Southeast Asia in the 19th & 20th Century) for SC/PR. Special exhibitions are paid but locals get a discounted ticket.
  • Singapore Philatelic Museum — Stamps and postal history.
  • Tanjong Pagar Distripark galleries — Contemporary art spaces including Singapore Art Museum exhibitions, often free to enter.

Tip: Work Permit and Special Pass holders get free entry to some museums on the last Sunday of each month.

Singapore is one of the greenest cities in the world and most of that greenery is free to explore.

  • Gardens by the Bay (outdoor gardens) — The Supertree Grove, Heritage Gardens, and outdoor sculptures are all free. Only the two conservatories (Cloud Forest and Flower Dome) require tickets. The Sustainability Gallery is also free and interactive.
  • Far East Organization Children's Garden (at Gardens by the Bay) — Free wet and dry play area for kids. Bring a change of clothes.
  • Borealis at Supertree Grove — Free light and sound performance on weekend evenings.
  • Singapore Botanic Gardens — A UNESCO World Heritage Site, free entry to most areas (National Orchid Garden is ticketed).
  • MacRitchie Reservoir & TreeTop Walk — Free nature trail through primary rainforest with a suspended bridge walk.

The Bottom Line

Singapore is expensive if you only look at the ticketed attractions. But between free museums, world-class nature trails, a digital library worth $1,000+/year, government credits, and a calendar of free performances and events — there's an enormous amount of free value that most residents don't fully tap into.

The common thread: most of these free things require nothing more than your NRIC, a library card, or a Singpass login. If you have those three things, you're already in.

Disclaimer: Admission policies, opening hours, and free access conditions may change. Always check the official website of each attraction before visiting. This article is for informational purposes only.
