Inca Trail, Peru

I’ll never forget my first step on the Inca Trail leading to the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu. This classic trek weaves through ancient ruins, cloud forests and high Andean passes before revealing the iconic citadel at sunrise.

It’s challenging but supremely rewarding and unforgettable. According to global trail rankings, the Inca Trail is one of the world’s most iconic hikes.

Tips:

  • Book permits early as they are limited each day.
  • Stay at hotels in Cusco a couple of nights before and after the hike to acclimatize.

Hotel Recommendation: Stay at a boutique lodge near Plaza de Armas in Cusco for easy access to cafes and altitude acclimation.

Milford Track, New Zealand

The Milford Track was pure magic from start to finish. Towering waterfalls, ancient beech forests and the dramatic fiords of Fiordland National Park made this one of the most scenic hikes I’ve ever done. Dubbed by many as one of the finest walks in the world, this multi-day trek feels like stepping into another realm.

Tips:

  • The best season is between October and April when the weather is most stable.
  • Book your huts well in advance as spots fill up fast.

Hotel Recommendation: Te Anau makes a great base before starting the track. Choose a cozy lodge with mountain views to rest up.

nepal

Annapurna Circuit, Nepal

If you want a Himalayan trek that tests your spirit and rewards you with epic mountain views, the Annapurna Circuit is it. The varied landscapes from rice terraces to high alpine passes kept me mesmerized every day. Consider doing this with a local guide for safety and cultural insight.

Tips:

  • Allow ample time for acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Pack layers as weather can change rapidly at high elevations.

Hotel Recommendation: Stays at hotel near to Annapura Circuit before and after the trek for lakeside views and delicious local food.

West Coast Trail, Canada

The West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island was hands-down one of the most rugged and rewarding experiences I’ve had. Ocean vistas, dense forests and challenging terrain make this hike for adventurous souls who love nature in its rawest form.

Tips:

  • Permits are required and the route is only open seasonally (May to September).
  • Prepare for wet conditions and pack waterproof gear.

Hotel Recommendation: Stay at West Coast Trail Lodge in Ucluelet before starting the hike. Its cozy cabins and scenic surroundings provide the perfect rest and recharge spot before tackling the trail.

spain

Camino de Santiago, Spain

Walking the Camino de Santiago wasn’t just about the miles—it was the people I met along the way. From rolling hills and vineyard paths to centuries-old cathedrals, each day was a new story. The French Way remains the most iconic route of this historic pilgrimage.

Tips:

  • You don’t have to walk the whole trail—many people choose popular sections with beautiful landscapes.
  • Wear broken-in hiking boots to avoid blisters.

Hotel Recommendation: Stay at Center Suite Acebedos for a comfortable and convenient base along the Camino de Santiago. Its modern amenities and cozy atmosphere make your pilgrimage experience even more enjoyable.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

If you dream of standing on Africa’s rooftop, Kilimanjaro is your challenge. The diverse ecosystems from rainforests to alpine desert to icy peaks kept me in awe. Though tough, reaching the summit at sunrise is indescribably powerful.

Tips:

  • Take your time on the ascent to help with acclimatization.
  • Hydrate constantly and choose a reputable guide company.

Hotel Recommendation: Stay at Babylon Lodge for a comfortable and welcoming base along the Camino de Santiago. Its cozy rooms and friendly atmosphere make your hiking experience even more memorable

Final Tips for Hikers

Every hike I’ve done has left me with lessons I’ll never forget. From my own experiences, here are a few tips that made my adventures smoother and more enjoyable:

Gear: I learned the hard way that a sturdy pair of boots and breathable, moisture-wicking clothes are lifesavers on long trails.

Health: Taking time to acclimatize at higher altitudes really made a difference—I felt stronger and avoided unnecessary fatigue.

Packing: I always try to pack light but make sure I have layers and waterproof gear. It’s amazing how often the weather changes unexpectedly.

Accommodation: Booking hotels and tours in advance through Trip.com gave me peace of mind and allowed me to focus on the hikes, not logistics. Choosing the right place to stay can make the whole experience even better.
