You're Overpaying for Your Phone Plan: SIM-Only vs Contract vs MVNO — the Real Cost Comparison for Singaporeans

Most Singaporeans spend $30-60/month on their phone plan without questioning it. Many are still on 24-month contracts because the "free phone" felt like a good deal two years ago. Others are on the same SIM-only plan they signed up for in 2023 without checking if something cheaper exists now.

The telco landscape in Singapore has changed dramatically.

MVNOs like SIMBA and Circles.Life now offer 500-600GB of 5G data for $10-15/month with no contract. That's less than half what the big 3 charge for similar data.

This guide isn't a plan-by-plan comparison table (those tend to fluctuate and go stale in months). Instead, it's the framework for deciding which plan type suits you, the real 2-year cost calculator most people never do, and the credit card trick that saves you another $15-50/year on top.

Prices sourced from official telco websites.

The 3 Plan Types Explained

Contract vs SIM-Only vs MVNO

Plan Type

How It Works

Best For

24-month contract

Higher monthly fee, but includes a phone subsidy (you pay less upfront for the phone). Locked in for 2 years with early termination penalties.

People who want a new phone without paying full price upfront and don't mind being locked in.

SIM-only (big 3 telcos)

Lower monthly fee, no phone included. Usually 12-month or no-contract from Singtel, StarHub, M1. You keep your existing phone or buy one outright.

People whose current phone still works fine, or who prefer to buy phones separately (often cheaper overall).

MVNO (SIMBA, Circles.Life, GOMO, etc.)

Cheapest monthly fee, no contract, uses the same networks as the big 3. Trade-off: fewer physical stores for support, sometimes no phone subsidy option.

Budget-conscious users, light users, seniors, students, or anyone who primarily needs data + WhatsApp and doesn't mind self-service support.

What Plans Actually Cost Right Now (April 2026)

Here's the current pricing landscape across all options. Notice how much cheaper the MVNOs are for essentially the same thing — data, calls, and SMS on the same networks.

Current Phone Plan Pricing (April 2026)

Provider / Plan

Data / Calls / Contract

Monthly Price

SIMBA 5G (500GB)

500GB 5G data, unlimited calls, no contract

$10/month

M1 5G SIM-only (150GB)

150GB 5G, 1,000 mins/SMS, no contract

$11.95/month

SIMBA 5G (600GB)

600GB 5G, 18GB APAC roaming, no contract

$12/month

SIMBA 5G (600GB + roaming)

600GB 5G, 8GB global + 25GB APAC roaming

$15/month

M1 5G SIM-only (1TB)

1TB 5G, 1,000 mins/SMS, free weekend data, no contract

$17.95/month

StarHub 5G Lite SIM-only

150GB, 1,000 mins, 750 SMS, no contract

$22/month

Singtel Lite 5G+ SIM-only

300GB 5G+, 400 mins, 12-month contract

$24.50/month

StarHub 5G Unlimited+ Core

Unlimited 5G, unlimited talk/SMS, 3GB global roaming, DeviceDollars

$38/month

The pattern is clear: MVNOs (SIMBA, M1 no-contract) offer 500GB-1TB for $10-18/month.

The big telcos (Singtel, StarHub) charge $22-38/month for 150-300GB. You're paying more for less data — the main thing you're buying is the brand name and in-store support.

The 2-Year Cost Calculator: Contract vs SIM-Only vs MVNO

Here's where most people get tricked. A contract plan looks cheaper because you get a "free" or subsidised phone. But when you add up the total cost over 24 months, the SIM-only + buy phone outright route is usually hundreds of dollars cheaper.

Let's use a real example with approximate numbers:

2-Year Total Cost Comparison

Scenario

Monthly + Phone Cost

2-Year Total

Contract with big telco (with phone)

~$55/month plan + $400 phone upfront

~$1,720

Singtel SIM-only + buy phone outright

$24.50/month + ~$1,299 phone (e.g. iPhone 17)

~$1,887

M1 SIM-only (1TB) + buy phone outright

$17.95/month + ~$1,299 phone

~$1,730

SIMBA MVNO + buy phone outright

$12/month + ~$1,299 phone

~$1,587

SIMBA MVNO + keep existing phone

$12/month + $0 phone

$288

Note the bottom row, pretty interesting stuff - if your current phone still works, switching to a $12/month MVNO saves you $1,432 over 2 years compared to a contract with a new phone.

Even if you buy a new phone outright, the SIMBA route saves ~$133 vs contract — and you get more data with no lock-in.

The Singtel SIM-only route is actually more expensive than the contract in this example because the phone subsidy covers more than the monthly price difference. This is why the math matters — the "right" answer depends on your specific situation.

How Much Data Do You Actually Need?

One of the biggest reasons people overpay: buying more data than they use. Check your average monthly usage in your phone's settings (Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data on iPhone, or Settings > Network > Data Usage on Android). Most people are surprised.

  • Light user (email, WhatsApp, maps, social media browsing): 3-10 GB/month. You're paying for 300GB and using 3%.
  • Moderate user (social media, streaming on the go, video calls): 10-30 GB/month.
  • Heavy user (constant streaming, hotspot for laptop, work on the go): 30-100 GB/month.

Unless you're in the heavy category, you don't need a 500GB or 1TB plan.

The cheapest SIMBA at $10/month with 500GB is mostly overkill. But at that price, you're paying less than the data you need anyway.

Special Plans Worth Knowing About

  • Seniors (60+): SIMBA at $5/month (500GB) or StarHub at $12/month (150GB). Both are purpose-built for seniors with simplified features.
  • Students/NSFs: MVNOs are the no-brainer. $10-12/month for more data than you'll ever use. No income verification, no credit check.
  • Frequent travellers: SIMBA's $15/month plan includes 8GB global + 25GB APAC roaming at no extra cost. Compare that to buying separate roaming passes or eSIMs.
  • Families: M1 offers add-on family lines from $6/month per line. SIMBA has 90-day plans with bulk savings.
  • Device upgraders: StarHub's DeviceDollars plan earns monthly credits toward a future phone purchase — interesting if you upgrade every 2-3 years.

The Credit Card Stack: Save Another $15-50/Year on Your Phone Bill

Whatever plan you choose, pay the monthly bill with a credit card instead of GIRO.

The OCBC 365 gives 3% cashback on recurring telco bills (with $800+ total monthly card spend).

The UOB One gives up to 10% at selected merchants including some telco payments.

On a $20/month phone bill, 3% cashback = $7.20/year. On a $40/month bill, it's $14.40/year. Small, but it's literally free money for changing your payment method from GIRO to card.

How to Switch (Without Losing Your Number)

Switching telcos is easier than most people think. You keep your existing phone number through a process called number porting:

  1. Check your current contract: Make sure your contract has ended or you're willing to pay the early termination fee. SIM-only and MVNO plans are usually month-to-month, so no penalty.
  2. Sign up with the new provider: Choose your new plan on the provider's website or app. Select "port in existing number" during sign-up.
  3. The new provider handles the switch: They'll coordinate with your old telco. Your old plan automatically terminates once the port completes (usually 1-3 business days).
  4. Activate your new SIM or eSIM: Insert the new SIM (or scan the eSIM QR code) and you're done. Your number transfers over.

The whole process takes 5 minutes of your time plus 1-3 days for the port to complete. You don't need to visit any store.

The Bottom Line

If your phone still works and you're on a contract or expensive SIM-only plan, switch to an MVNO like SIMBA ($10-15/month) or M1 no-contract ($12-18/month).

If you need a new phone, do the 2-year total cost calculation before signing a contract. Sometimes the contract subsidy is genuinely good value. Sometimes buying the phone outright + a cheap SIM-only plan is hundreds cheaper. The answer depends on the specific contract terms though, take note!

And whatever you do, pay your phone bill with a cashback credit card instead of GIRO. It's the easiest $7-15/year you'll ever earn.
