Tokyo was one of those cities that completely surprised me in the best way possible. The moment I arrived, everything felt alive. Neon lights, quiet shrines, tiny cafes hidden in alleys, and the most efficient transport system I have ever used.

It is a city where tradition and modern life exist side by side, and every neighbourhood feels like a different world. If you are planning a Tokyo trip and wondering where to start, these are the places that truly made my journey unforgettable.

Shibuya Crossing and Shibuya Sky

My Tokyo trip officially began in Shibuya. Standing at Shibuya Crossing during peak hours felt unreal. People moving from every direction, lights flashing, music playing, yet somehow everything works perfectly.

I highly recommend visiting Shibuya Sky just before sunset. Watching the city change from daylight to glowing night lights from the rooftop was one of my favourite moments in Tokyo. Book tickets early because this spot sells out fast.

If you want to stay nearby, Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu is incredibly convenient and offers amazing city views.

Tip: One thing that really helped me save money was setting flight price alerts on Trip.com and booking as soon as I saw a good deal.

Asakusa and Senso ji Temple

Asakusa felt like stepping back in time.  Senso ji Temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple, and walking through the Kaminarimon Gate early in the morning was peaceful and beautiful.

I spent time exploring Nakamise Street, trying traditional snacks and buying small souvenirs. My tip is to come early before tour groups arrive so you can enjoy the atmosphere quietly.

Hotel Gracery Asakusa is affordable, clean, and close to the subway which makes getting around very easy.

Tip: Choose hotels in Tokyo near train stations or metro lines to save time and make exploring the city easier.

Shinjuku and Tokyo Nightlife

Shinjuku is energetic, chaotic, and exciting all at once. From shopping malls to tiny yakitori bars hidden in Golden Gai, this area truly comes alive at night.

I loved exploring Omoide Yokocho, a narrow alley filled with local food stalls. It felt very local and authentic. Even if you do not drink alcohol, the vibe alone is worth experiencing.

Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku is perfect for first time visitors because it is close to Shinjuku Station and airport transport.

Tip: Book flights to Tokyo as soon as you confirm your itinerary as prices rise quickly during the autumn peak season.

tsukiji

Tsukiji Outer Market

Tsukiji Outer Market was a food lover’s dream. Wandering through rows of fresh seafood stalls, sushi counters, and tiny snack shops felt like discovering a hidden world of flavors. I tried some of the freshest sushi I’ve ever had, and sampling local treats from small vendors made the experience even more memorable.

For convenience, I suggest staying stay at Hotel Monterey Ginza, which is just a short train ride away and places you in the heart of central Tokyo.

Tip: You should go early in the morning to catch the freshest catches and avoid the busiest crowds.

Ueno

Ueno Park was one of the most peaceful escapes in Tokyo. Walking through the spacious park, surrounded by museums, ponds, and cherry blossom trees (if you visit in spring), felt like a breath of fresh air in the middle of the city. I also spent a fun couple of hours at Ueno Zoo, especially enjoying the giant pandas.

I recommend staying at APA Hotel Keisei Ueno-Ekimae is a great choice nearby, offering comfortable rooms and easy access to both Ueno Park and Ueno Station.

Tip: Visit Ueno Park in the morning for a quiet stroll, then explore nearby museums or the zoo before it gets busy.

My Tokyo Travel Tips

  • Get a Suica or Pasmo card for trains. It saves time and works almost everywhere
  • Stay near a major train station for convenience
  • Book attractions early through Trip.com during peak seasons
  • Try local food even from small shops. Some of the best meals I had were from places with only a few seats
