If you’ve completed National Service in Singapore, you’re sitting on a stack of perks, tax savings, and government payouts that most NSmen either don’t know about or never bother to use. SAFRA emails go unopened. The NS HOME Award milestones tick by unchecked. Tax relief gets auto-applied but never noticed. Free movie tickets go unclaimed.

I went through the various NS-related portals, club memberships, and tax rules so you don’t have to.

Realistically, most NSmen can squeeze $300–1,200 a year out of these perks - and comfortably clear $1,000 if they actively use a few of the big ones. This guide maps every NSman benefit available in 2026, with exact dollar values, so you can decide which ones are actually worth your time.

Last verified: 15 April 2026. Sources: safra.sg, hometeamns.sg, ns.gov.sg, iras.gov.sg.

1. NS HOME Award - $17,000-18,500 in CPF and credits

This is the single largest NSman benefit most people don’t pay attention to. The NS HOME Award is a multi-stage payout totalling $17,000 (non-commanders) to $18,500 (commanders, 3SG and above) - distributed across three milestones in your NS cycle.

NS HOME Award Milestones

Milestone

Payout

Breakdown

1. Finish Full-Time NS

$6,000

$3K PSEA + $2K CPF MediSave + $1K LifeSG Credits

2. Mid-Point of NS Cycle

$5,500

$3K CPF-OA + $2K CPF MediSave + $500 LifeSG Credits

3. End of NS Cycle

$5,500

$3K CPF-OA + $2K CPF MediSave + $500 LifeSG Credits

Total

$17,000

+$500/milestone for Commanders = $18,500

The $2,000 in LifeSG Credits across the three milestones is for immediate spending at any PayNow UEN QR or NETS QR merchant. The CPF top-ups ($9K to OA, $6K to MediSave) support your housing and healthcare. The $3K PSEA goes toward post-secondary education.

Most people only notice the first $6,000 at ORD - and completely forget the remaining $11,000+ that comes later over the years. Set a reminder so you actually notice when each tranche lands.

  • Eligibility - Singapore Citizen who enlisted on or after 1 December 2011 and finished full-time NS on or after 1 December 2013.
  • Performance requirement - no outstanding IPPT offences or E-gradings within the last 3 years.
  • Disbursement - credited via the LifeSG app within 3 months of reaching each milestone.

Check your milestone status via the LifeSG app or OneNS portal (ns.gov.sg).

2. NSman Tax Relief - $1,500-5,000 every year (automatic)

Every NSman gets a tax relief automatically applied to their IRAS tax assessment - no application needed. MINDEF/MHA sends the data directly to IRAS. Most NSmen don’t even notice because it happens in the background.

NSman Tax Relief (YA 2026)

Category

Relief Amount

NSman (base, non-active)

$1,500

Active NSman (attended ICT)

$3,000

Key Appointment Holder (active)

Up to $5,000

NSman’s Wife

$750

NSman’s Parent

$750 per parent

What this means in dollar savings: if you’re an active NSman earning $60,000/year (taxable), the $3,000 relief saves you about $210-330 in actual tax paid, depending on your marginal tax rate. For a KAH at $5,000 relief, the savings are $350-550. Not huge per year - but it’s completely free and automatic over your entire NSman cycle.

Your wife and parents can also claim their $750 relief each - just make sure they tick the NSman-related relief when filing. The YA 2026 filing deadline is 18 April 2026.

3. SAFRA membership - what you actually get for $30/year

SAFRA is the club network for SAF NSmen. Most NSmen sign up, get the card, and then… never use it. That’s a waste, because the membership costs roughly $30-44 per year and the perks easily exceed that if you use even a fraction of them.

Honestly, most people won’t use half of what SAFRA offers. That’s fine - the point is knowing which perks are worth your time so you can cherry-pick the ones that fit your life.

Membership cost

  • NSmen (Ordinary A) - currently ~$60 for 2 years (~$30/year) during promotional periods. Regular price is $87.20 for 2 years.
  • Full-time NSFs - complimentary membership. But you must register to access the perks and vouchers.
  • Dependents - ~$43.60 for 2 years with a principal member.
  • SAFRA DBS Card - applying for the co-branded SAFRA DBS Credit Card gives you 2 years free membership. The card itself has no annual fee.

The perks worth knowing about

The truth is most of these perks are forgettable. The ones below are the few actually worth caring about.

  • Free movie tickets - SAFRA runs 10+ movie contests per year. Answer a simple question and you can win free tickets to blockbuster screenings. There are hundreds of pairs per contest, so your chances are decent.
  • SAFRAPoints - $1 spent at SAFRA clubs and participating merchants = 1 SAFRAPoint. Every 100 points = $2 value (effectively a 2% rebate). Double points during your birthday month.
  • 1,500+ merchant deals - discounts at restaurants, retail, services. Up to 3% cash rebate at all retail merchants when paying with SAFRA DBS Card.
  • Fuel perks - petrol discounts at selected stations for SAFRA members.
  • Club facilities - swimming pools, bowling alleys, gyms, entertainment at 7 clubs islandwide (Choa Chu Kang, Jurong, Mt Faber, Punggol, Tampines, Toa Payoh, Yishun).
  • Bond-Free Education Scheme - education sponsorships for members. No bond attached.
  • Free legal information - SAFRA Legal Information Service for basic legal guidance.
  • Sentosa privileges - discounted attraction passes for members.
  • Shaw Theatres discounts - ongoing cinema deals beyond the free movie contests.
  • NSRCC and D’Resort - resort and staycation access at National Service Resort & Country Club.

4. HomeTeamNS - the Home Team equivalent (and reciprocal access)

If you served in SPF (Police) or SCDF (Civil Defence), HomeTeamNS is your equivalent of SAFRA. They operate 3 clubhouses, and some of the facilities are better than most people expect.

Membership cost

  • Ordinary Member - $54.50 for 2 years, $109 for 5 years, $163.50 for 10 years (inclusive of GST).
  • Family Member - $21.80 for 2 years (spouse, parents, children under 21).
  • Infinity Membership - new option for eligible members aged 30+. Lifetime membership that never expires.
  • Sign-up gifts - $10 GrabGifts voucher for 5-year membership, $20 for 10-year.

Standout facilities

  • Adventure HQ (Khatib) - a 4-storey, 2,800sqm indoor adventure hub with climbing walls and obstacle courses.
  • Fitness Workz - gyms across all 3 clubhouses, including NS Fit programmes and virtual fitness training.
  • T-Play Indoor Playground - for kids, with interactive play elements. Great for families.
  • ManCaves - private entertainment rooms at Bedok Reservoir and Khatib (KTV, gaming, BBQ).
  • East Villa and West Villa - chalets and staycation facilities.
  • Preschool discounts - $50-100 off monthly fees at Learning Leap, Little Footprints, and KiddiWinkie. Over a year, that’s $600-1,200 in savings.

Reciprocal access

HomeTeamNS members get reciprocal access to SAFRA clubs, and vice versa. You can also access Civil Service Club (CSC) facilities at affiliated rates. So even if you’re a Home Team NSman, you’re not limited to 3 clubhouses - you effectively have access to 10+ clubs across the island.

5. EnergyOne gym - the $45/month gym most people don’t know about

EnergyOne is SAFRA’s gym chain, operating across all 7 SAFRA clubs. For SAFRA members, it’s one of the best-value gym memberships in Singapore - significantly cheaper than commercial chains like Anytime Fitness ($70-100/month) or Virgin Active ($150+/month).

EnergyOne Gym Rates (April 2026)

Membership Type

Rate

SAFRA Platinum Member

~$45/month (18-month term)

SAFRA Dependent Member

~$35/month

Non-Member (Guest Term)

~$60-70/month

ORD Personnel (special)

~$300/12 months ($25/month)

Guest (per entry)

$13.10-21.80 (peak/off-peak)

The ORD personnel rate of $25/month is the standout deal - if you’ve recently ORD’d, lock in 12 months at $300 total before it expires. Memberships include access to all 7 EnergyOne locations plus saunas and jacuzzis where available.

There’s currently a 50% off joining fees promotion running (April 2026). Joining fee drops to ~$95-110 depending on membership type. Check SAFRA EnergyOne’s page for the latest.

6. The perks most NSmen actually miss

Beyond the big-ticket items above, here are the specific perks that NSmen consistently overlook:

  • Movie Treats contests - SAFRA gives away hundreds of pairs of free movie tickets per contest, 10+ times a year. Just log in to the SAFRA app and answer one question. Your odds are better than you’d think.
  • Birthday double SAFRAPoints - spend at any SAFRA club or participating merchant during your birthday month and earn double points. If you’re going to eat out or use facilities that month anyway, do it at SAFRA.
  • SAFRA fuel perks - petrol discounts for members at selected stations. Stack this with a petrol credit card for maximum savings.
  • HomeTeamNS preschool discounts - $50-100 off monthly school fees at three preschool chains. Over a year that’s $600-1,200 - far more than the membership costs.
  • Bond-free education sponsorship - SAFRA sponsors members for courses and certifications with no bond. Check safra.sg/promotions/bond-free-education-scheme.
  • Tax relief for your wife and parents - $750 each, claimed separately on their own tax returns. Most NSmen don’t tell their family members about this.

7. The 10-minute setup checklist

Here’s how to make sure you’re not leaving anything on the table:

  1. Download the SAFRA app (or HomeTeamNS app) - access your e-card, browse deals, enter movie contests, and check SAFRAPoints balance.
  2. Check your NS HOME Award status on LifeSG - log in and see which milestones you’ve hit and what’s been credited.
  3. Verify your NSman tax relief on myTax Portal - it’s automatic, but check it’s been applied correctly. YA 2026 deadline is 18 April 2026.
  4. Tell your wife and parents to claim their $750 relief - they claim it on their own tax returns under NSman Wife/Parent Relief.
  5. Consider the SAFRA DBS Card - 2 years free SAFRA membership + up to 3% cash rebate at merchants + no annual fee. It’s the lowest-effort way to stack SAFRA benefits.
  6. Bookmark the SAFRA promotions page - safra.sg/promotions updates regularly with new merchant deals, Sentosa privileges, and fuel perks.
  7. If you recently ORD’d, grab the EnergyOne $25/month deal - $300 for a full year at 7 gym locations. One of the best-value gym options if you live near a SAFRA club.

Singapore has a surprising number of these hidden money systems - benefits you technically have, but only capture if you know where to look.
