At the National Day Rally on 23 August 2026, the Government announced the SG Child Support Package. It gives up to $62,000 per Singapore Citizen child from birth to age 17, and it applies regardless of birth order.

This is not an add-on. The Baby Bonus and Large Families schemes will be replaced by the new package, and every birth order receives more support than before.

Counting existing benefits, the $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and around $2,500 of Edusave contributions, each child receives roughly $70,000 of direct financial support from birth to 17.

If you have seen both $62,000 and $70,000 reported, both are right. $62,000 is the new package on its own. About $70,000 is the total once the MediSave Grant for Newborns and Edusave, which already existed, are added on top.

Two things to get straight before you do the maths on your own family. Payouts start from April 2027, and the full $62,000 applies to children born from 1 April 2027 onwards. Children already born get a smaller, age-dependent subset.

The package covers every Singapore Citizen child aged 17 and below, not just newborns. Children already enrolled in Baby Bonus will be transitioned automatically.

1. What is in the $62,000

The package has five components. Two are cash, two go into the Child Development Account, and one goes into the education account the child uses after secondary school.

The single biggest change in shape is the Child Credits. Instead of most of the money arriving in the first couple of years, $32,000 is spread as $2,000 a year for sixteen years.

That is a deliberate shift from front-loaded support to sustained support through the years when childcare, enrichment and school costs actually bite.

What your child actually gets depends on birth year

The full $62,000 is the figure for a child born from 1 April 2027. An older child has already passed some of the milestones the package pays at, so they receive a subset. This is the part most coverage leaves out.

Child Credits are $2,000 a year for children turning 1 to 16 from 2026 onwards. The first payout is from April 2027, and after that it lands on the child's birthday.

2. What replaces Baby Bonus and the Large Families Scheme

Both schemes are being replaced rather than topped up. The SG Child Support Package absorbs them into one structure that pays the same amount regardless of whether a child is a first or a fourth child.

Under the old Baby Bonus structure, cash gift amounts differed by birth order. Under the new package they do not.

Large families still get extra help

• The $5,000 Large Family MediSave Grant continues, and MSF is studying how to reposition and extend it to existing large families that have not received it
• The Ministry of Transport will provide additional support to help large families manage transport costs
• The Ministry of National Development is studying additional housing support for large families

3. When each payment lands

The package is designed as a timeline rather than a lump sum. Here is the shape of it across a child's first 17 years.

On top of that sit the existing $5,000 MediSave Grant for Newborns and Edusave contributions across primary and secondary school of around $2,500, which is how the figure reaches roughly $70,000.

4. The CDA now runs to age 16

The Child Development Account will be extended to the end of the year the child turns 16, up from 12 today. That is four more years of Government co-matching and four more years to spend the balance.

This matters more than it sounds. CDA funds can only be used at approved institutions for child-raising expenses, and plenty of parents reach the old cut-off with money still sitting in the account.

A longer window also means the co-matching is worth planning around rather than rushing, because you now have more years to hit the cap.

5. Cheaper preschool from 2028

Fees at Government-supported preschools will be cut to $150 a month for full-day childcare and $300 a month for infant care, both before means-testing. That is less than half of what those places cost today.

The timing is the part to be realistic about. The reductions roll out progressively from 2028, with target levels reached by 2030, and implementation details are only due in early 2027.

Two other preschool changes

• Full childcare and infant care subsidies will be extended to families regardless of the working status of the main applicant, which removes a long-standing gap for non-working parents
• The network of Government-supported preschool operators will expand, along with the infant educator workforce

Until those changes land, the current subsidy rules and fee caps are still what your bill is calculated against.

6. Childcare leave is being merged

Childcare Leave and Extended Childcare Leave will be merged into a single streamlined scheme for working parents with children aged 12 and below.

Today a working parent whose youngest Singapore Citizen child is 6 or below gets 6 days of Childcare Leave a year, while a parent whose youngest child is 7 to 12 gets 2 days of Extended Childcare Leave. The merged scheme replaces that split.

The Government will also cover the cost of all child-related leave for all child orders up to the reimbursement limit, including for eligible self-employed persons. That is aimed at employers, and at making parents feel able to actually take the leave.

The start date for the new scheme has not been announced, and the final number of days has not been set out in the official written details, so treat any specific day count you see as provisional until MSF publishes it.

Shared parental leave sits separately and is already in force.

7. An extra BTO ballot chance per child

From the February 2027 sales exercise, first-timer families with or expecting children will receive one additional ballot chance for each Singapore Citizen child aged 18 and below. It applies to all BTO and Sale of Balance Flats applications.

This is on top of the priority these families already receive, and it stacks with the higher HDB income ceilings announced at the same rally.

8. What has not been confirmed yet

Several dates are now confirmed. Payouts start from April 2027, Baby Bonus children transition automatically, and the extra BTO ballot chance begins in February 2027. These are still open:

• The exact number of days in the merged Childcare Leave scheme, and when it starts
• How the repositioned Large Family MediSave Grant will work for families that already had children
• The precise preschool fee schedule between 2028 and 2030, with details due in early 2027
• What the transport and housing support for large families will look like

Two transition rules worth diarising

• Children born before 1 April 2027 can keep saving to their existing CDA co-matching cap until 30 September 2027. From 1 October 2027 all caps become $5,000
• Children turning 17 in 2026 receive the $10,000 PSEA top-up in June 2027, and in later years it lands in June of the year they turn 17

These measures are the first set of recommendations from the Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup, which will publish a fuller report in early 2027. Expect the remaining operational detail then.
